The Psychology of Selling Art
The Psychology of Selling has been discussed, disected and debated by better, brighter and some would say more beautiful than me but few have looked at selling from an artists perspective or if they have, I have yet to find it. So here’s my take on the psychology of selling (AKA art marketing made simple)…
Selling art is an art in itself and requires the same amount of skill and know-how as you need to sell a car or a house. Small changes in your perceptions and what you do can make a huge difference in how quickly you can and will succeed at selling your artwork. Here is my guide to mastering the psychology of selling art.
Start With Yourself And Work Outwards
We are often bombarded with people telling us what to do and how to act/paint/talk/behave. We get so many mixed messages we don’t know if we are coming or going and we lose the essence of ourselves in order to please or fit in with others. I remember when I first started taking my work out to a wider audience and every piece of advice I heard, I took onboard. If people told me to try something or to change my style I was prepared to do it to try to please and try to find a market for my work. But what happened was I became a shadow of what I actually was as an artist; I watered down the essence of my work in order to be accepted and in doing so actually had the opposite effect and drove people away from my work looking bemused, confused and bewildered; I became a lost soul and the only way to get back the uniqueness of my work was to be myself.
We often look at others and say “I wish I was them” but you don’t need to be anything other than yourself when creating your art. You just need to be yourself and that is good enough. In fact, the more of “You” that you can be, the more you will find success in selling your art online, as you will see.
Happy art selling!!
